A new multicultural fraternity at the University of Nevada, Reno will hold recruitment events for the first time after being chartered Aug. 26 by their national organization.

The fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma, currently has five members and was recognized by the university in March. At their ceremony in the Joe Crowley Student Union, the five members were formally inducted into the national fraternity and heard speeches from national members as well as university administration, including Provost Marc Johnson.

Anthony Dionisi, the president of the chapter, said he doesn’t want to consider getting a house for the fraternity until it has grown. Growth is important to the fledgling chapter, Dionisi said, as well as acceptance.

“I want us to grow here and I don’t want our fraternity to be a fraternity made up of just one kind of person,” he said.

UNR alumnus Mayo Thompson, who first joined the organization at the University of Arizona, started the Reno chapter. When Thompson moved to Reno for graduate school, he felt the fraternity could help the university with graduation rates, social community and the “overall feeling of the place.”

Reginald Chhen Stewart, the director of the Center for Student Cultural Diversity, said he connected with Thompson during the student’s frequent visits to the center, which became Thompson’s recruitment pool.

Stewart said new fraternities help provide more choices for students, which makes the Greek system friendlier to the campus.

“The importance of fraternities and sororities in general is having enough variety,” he said.

He also said the Greek system is beneficial to campus because it regulates grades and helps members graduate, which he said is one of its main differences from clubs.

Charles Ranson, Phi Beta Sigma’s Western regional director, said during the ceremony that grades were the most important thing for the new chapter to take care of.

“Education is first,” Ranson said. “My fraternity is number two.”

Though Thompson said the fraternity is historically a black fraternity, it is open to everyone.

“We seek to judge people based on their merits, not their color or how affluent they are,” he said.

Thompson hopes the fraternity’s efforts in community service will help it become a “big part of the (campus) community, as well as the Reno-Sparks community.” One such project Thompson hopes to see flourish in Reno is Phi Beta Sigma’s national youth auxiliary program, the Sigma Beta Club, which teaches boys ages 8-18 about money management, study skills, how to get into college and more.

Phi Beta Sigma’s motto is “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity.” The fraternity has had such notable members as George Washington Carver, Al Sharpton and Al Roker. The UNR chapter of the fraternity is the Gamma Alpha Lambda chapter.

Early Saturday morning, a crowd gathered on the side of U.S. 61 to dedicate a freshly erected sign in memory of Kimberley Ann Allen.

Allen died in July 2009, but her memory lives on through the newly placed sign and the lives of the friends and family she touched.

Lawanda Bradford was a friend of Allen’s and said the sign on U.S. 61 is a great way to commemorate Allen’s life.

“We want people coming in and out of Natchez to be able to see her name,” she said. “She did so much good for her community.”

Bradford said Allen was involved in numerous organizations such as the Girl Scouts and the Krewe of Janus.

“She was also a police office for the City of Natchez,” Bradford said. “Eight months before she passed, she was even promoted to detective.”

The month of September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, and Bradford said there was no better time to celebrate the life of Allen who died from the disease.

Allen’s first cousin, Yokena Anderson, said she wants the sign to evoke one simple thought to people who read it.

“Kimberley Ann Allen,” she said. “I remember her.”

Allen was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Natchez Alumnae Chapter, and Berthenia Rose Jackson, president of the chapter, said she could not have asked for a greater member.

“Kimberley was the type of Delta everyone needed,” she said. “She couldn’t make it to every meeting, but she would do anything she could to help the chapter out.”

Jackson said there was a Relay for Life event in Allen’s honor earlier this year.

“It was a tremendous outpouring of love,” Jackson said. “We raised around $3,000 and we want to make it an annual event.”

In an address to the crowd of approximately 40 people, Bradford opened with a poem.

“Every step I take, every move I make, every single day and every time I pray, I’m missing you,” she said.

Allen’s daughter, Kiara Allen, was brought to tears during the speech and said it was nice to let her mother’s memory be known in Natchez.

“She did a lot in the community,” she said. “She was a good mom and a good person who had a lot of friends.”

If she could tell her mom one thing, Allen said the message would be one of appreciation.

“I just want to tell her how much I love her, and how proud I am of the things she accomplished,” she said.

One of the stipulations to having the sign in Allen’s memory is to keep the area around it clean, Bradford said.

“We have to clean it at least four times a year,” she said. “(Allen) would not want the streets dirty. She would want everyone doing their part.”

Bradford said she has already had groups contact her and offer to help clean, but that any additional help would be appreciated.

Anyone interested in helping keep the area around the sign clean, e-mail Lawanda Bradford at LawandaBradford1913@yahoo.com.

From the streets of Detroit hails one of Macon County’s newest prosecutors, a man who speaks fondly of community and justice.

Maurice Davis, 26, started as an assistant state’s attorney on May 24. He graduated from Florida State University College of Law last year.

The new job keeps Davis busy. He handles traffic cases, which means he works with people caught driving over the speed limit, without a license, without insurance or without wearing a seatbelt.

Many assistant state’s attorneys who handle these types of cases want to be felony prosecutors someday, and Davis is no exception.

“I’m from the inner city and I saw how violence has really torn the city apart. That’s another reason why I wanted to be a prosecutor, to help combat that violence,” said Davis, who also mentioned a love of community service as motivation.

Someday, he might prosecute violent criminals, but for now it’s traffic violators – and lots of them. Davis handles anywhere from 50 to 170 cases a day, and comes in an hour early, at 7:30 a.m., on Wednesdays through Fridays to speak with people facing traffic citations.

It’s a lot of work, but Davis has never shied from that. He started his first job at McDonald’s when he was 14 and worked a string of others throughout high school, including Denny’s and Comerica Park.

He also maintained a 3.5 grade point average, but Davis is humble about his work ethic.

“I was just motivated,” he said, shrugging.

At Michigan State, he worked on campus and joined Alpha Phi Alpha, a fraternity that often organizes community service. Once he gets settled, Davis hopes to look up other Alpha members who are living in Decatur.

Davis said his hero is former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, but his inspiration comes from his mother, who works at a bank and has four other children. He is also close to his two aunts, one of whom makes macaroni and cheese that Davis said he could eat for the rest of his life.

First Assistant State’s Attorney Jay Scott said Davis was chosen from a pool of 14 other candidates, all of whom were interviewed by a committee that included Scott and State’s Attorney Jack Ahola.

“He had a good prosecutor’s mentality,” Scott said of Davis. “It takes a certain personality to be an effective prosecutor, and we thought he had it.”

Morris, Manning & Martin is pleased to announce that Partner James “Mac” Hunter will be inducted into the Gate City Bar Association’s Hall of Fame during its annual gala event on November 6. Past honorees include civil rights legend Donald Hollowell, Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, Georgia governor Roy Barnes, and state Supreme Court Justices Robert Benham and Leah Ward Sears.

The Gate City Bar Association, the oldest African-American Bar Association in the state of Georgia, will honor Mr. Hunter for his contributions to society, for his efforts to give back to the community and serve others, and for being an advocate for justice, diversity and equality.
“The firm is immensely proud of Mac and his accomplishments,” said Managing Partner Louise Wells. “Mac dedicates a great deal of his time – and himself – to making our firm and Atlanta, as well as our legal community, a better place. This honor is well deserved.”

Throughout his legal career, Mr. Hunter has fought to recruit and to expand career opportunities for other African-American attorneys. Prior to joining private practice, he was a senior trial attorney with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission where he was responsible for litigating some of the first cases under the 1972 Amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He has also served as a dedicated mentor to many younger lawyers and has challenged and inspired them to advance in their legal careers while also giving back to the community.

“Over the years, Mac has been a zealous advocate for his clients, a mentor to other attorneys, and a champion for the less fortunate in our community through his civic involvements,” said colleague Clyde Mize, the Gate City Bar member who nominated Mr. Hunter for the Hall of Fame. “He is a great role model for me, as well as others in the firm. I am proud to call him both a colleague and a friend.”

For nearly four decades, Mr. Hunter has labored to improve and strengthen the Atlanta community by endeavoring to educate, inspire and enrich the lives of its residents. In addition to his support of the Gate City Bar Association, he has been actively involved with organizations such as the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Goodwill Industries of North Georgia, Inc., and the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency (AWDA), where he serves as chairman. He is also National General Counsel for the 100 Black Men of America, Inc. (a position he has held for nearly 25 years), General Counsel for the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc., General Counsel for the National Black College Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc., General Counsel for the National Cares Mentoring Program, Inc. and General Counsel for the Trumpet Awards Foundation, Inc. He is a member of Kappa Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Atlanta Chapter of National Association of Guardsmen, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Rick Scott and Jennifer Carroll made their debut as the Republican gubernatorial ticket Thursday and met small but enthusiastic crowds on a three-city flyaround.

In Brandon, Orlando and Jacksonville, Scott and Carroll talked up the importance of creating jobs in a struggling Sunshine State and Scott criticized Democratic rival Alex Sink for supporting “the Socialist policies of President Obama.”

Carroll — an African-American state representative, Navy veteran, small business owner and immigrant from Trinidad — brings gender balance as Scott’s running mate and offers a sharp visual contrast to the lanky Midwesterner who presided over the expansion of the Columbia/HCA hospital network.

“Working together, we will broaden the base of our party, reaching out to every Floridian who wants a better future for their families,” Scott said as he introduced Carroll to TV cameras for the first time near her Fleming Island home. The site was the entrance of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, with a sleek-looking Blue Angel jet in the background. In attendance was U.S. Navy Adm. Kevin Delaney, Carroll’s former boss.

In Carroll, Scott gets an experienced legislator who can help guide him through Tallahassee, still a strange world to him. And already she’s creating enthusiasm among Republican activists eager for something positive after the bitter primary between Scott and Bill McCollum.

“It’s awesome. It’s nice to have new blood,” said Michelle Beaudoin of Brandon at the day’s last stop at a party headquarters in Hillsborough. “It will be two people who haven’t been career politicians.”

Mary Ellen Ludeking, who owns a Jacksonville small business, called Carroll an asset to the GOP ticket. “Jennifer is a very good person with high morals and a high work ethic who served our country,” Ludeking said.

At a storefront GOP office in Jacksonville, Scott was flanked by Carroll on his left and his wife, Ann, on his right. Most of the senior advisers on Scott’s campaign are women as well.

Sink, the Democratic nominee, said Carroll’s race and gender will not matter to Florida voters.

“We’re going to be focused over the next weeks on the vision for Florida,” Sink said. “And I think people when they go to vote, they’re past all these gender and racial issues. They’re really looking at the candidates and the messages and the commitments that the candidates have to changing the future of Florida.”

As for Scott’s reference to Socialism, Sink said: “He obviously doesn’t know a thing about me, does he?”

Carroll said she supports Scott’s hard-line views on illegal immigration and in support of a state law similar to one adopted earlier this year in Arizona.

“The bottom line is legal immigration. We cannot reward people for their illegal acts in coming to this country,” Carroll said. Even for legal immigrants like herself, she said, the process is “cumbersome, tedious and not friendly,” adding: “One thing we have to get away from is the race factor, because immigrants come from different backgrounds, like myself, from Trinidad. Not always Mexican.”

In the Republican primary, Carroll supported McCollum and chaired a statewide African-Americans for McCollum group. Explaining that decision, she said: “Bill McCollum came into the race early … I was loyal to my word. At the end of the day, a man’s word and a woman’s word have to be their bond.”

Carroll said she was approached months ago about her possible interest in being Scott’s running mate. She was considered for a similar post by Charlie Crist four years ago and twice ran unsuccessfully for Congress.

Scott, who has campaigned against “career politicians,” portrayed Carroll as an outsider, even though she has been a member of the Legislature for seven years and is part of the leadership team as a majority whip.

“She’s an outsider. She clearly says what she thinks,” Scott said. “She was absolutely the best choice. … We talked to a lot of people.”

Carroll, 51, was born in Trinidad, came to the United States at age 8 and enlisted in the Navy in 1979, serving 20 years and retiring as a lieutenant commander, aviation service officer. The self-employed owner of a public relations consulting firm, she was the first black Republican woman elected to the state Legislature and previously ran the state Department of Veterans Affairs under former Gov. Jeb Bush. She is married with three children, including Nolan, a rookie with the Miami Dolphins.

Scott joked that with his four years of naval service as a radarman, coupled with Carroll’s two decades of service, “We can probably make sure all the helicopter pilots never get lost.”

Carroll joined Scott in hitting the Republicans’ core message of linking Sink to President Barack Obama and his policies.

“This is a critical election for Florida,” Carroll said in Jacksonville. “Our opponents embrace the failed policies of Washington, D.C. They believe in growing government instead of growing jobs.”

Asked how Carroll would create jobs, Scott said: “She knows, just like I know, that the way you get an economy going is, you get government out of the way. You’ve got to reduce regulation, and you’ve got to downsize the size of state government.”

Carroll’s debut on the statewide stage wasn’t gaffe-free. Citing Scott’s “7-7-7″ plan to take seven steps to create 700,000 new jobs over seven years, she turned to her running mate and said: “Seven years, 7,000 jobs, right Rick? Seven hundred jobs in seven years.”

Radio pioneer Faye Foppé Fisher has died.

Fisher passed away early Thursday morning at Christus Schumpert Medical Center. She was 77.

Fisher, commonly known as Foxy Faye, was a trailblazer in local radio as the first black female radio personality in Shreveport and the second black female radio personality in the state.

The Grambling State University alumna and longtime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. started her career in 1954 at KANV, which later became KOKA, where she hosted “Faye in Hi-Fi.”

Her career spanned more than 50 years before she retired in 2004 due to complications from diabetes. However, her impact on the radio industry endeared her to many.

“For me, she was kind of like my second mom. She was definitely my radio mom,” said radio personality and business owner Quenn Echols. “In my career, I’ve only had the honor of meeting a few firsts, but boy was that a first when I met her. She was definitely one of a kind and truly a blessing to everyone who came across her.”

Music producer and former disc jockey Ken Shepherd echoed similar sentiments about the woman he also refers to as his second mom.

“I started hanging around that radio station when I was 14 and all of them, her, B.B. Davis, Gay Poppa, they raised me. They nurtured me through and that was a long time ago, but Faye and I, she’s just been one of my best friends for 40 years,” Shepherd said. “She’s absolutely a media and broadcasting trailblazer and the older generation knows that, but everybody need to know that.”

Funeral arrangements are pending, but services are tentatively set for Sept. 11.

When honor student Courtney Howard pledged to join a sorority at San Jose State University, she sought the support of close-knit sisters in the school’s small African-American community.

Instead, what she got was ritualized hazing that included a nearly monthlong string of beatings, punching, kicking and paddling, according to a lawsuit filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court this week — an episode that experts say is far too common among African-American Greek organizations.

Howard, 20, has sued eight students, the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and the university, saying it failed to investigate and protect her from retaliation by sorority members after reporting the 2008 incident. She has since withdrawn from SJSU and transferred to the University of Southern California, saying she didn’t feel safe.

Four of the SJSU students — Princess Odom, Monique Hughes, Nicole Remble and Joslyn Beard — have already been convicted of misdemeanor hazing in criminal court, sentenced to 90 days in jail and two years probation.

“There was physical violence,” said Howard’s attorney, Angela Reddock of Los Angeles. Howard is seeking unspecified damages. “Any number of steps could have been taken by the university to change her living situation and provide security, but that did not happen.”

SJSU spokesman Larry Carr would not comment on the lawsuit, but he did say the university has suspended Sigma Gamma Rho until at least 2016 after concluding the chapter had violated anti-hazing regulations.

The 87-year-old sorority was also suspended seven years ago following another hazing incident. Another African-American sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, is suspended from SJSU.

“We enforce a very strict no-hazing policy. We do proper investigations and take complaints very seriously,” said Carr. “We want to make sure our students feel that San Jose State is a safe place to be.”

Founded in 1922 in the midst of segregation, Sigma Gamma Rho was created to enhance the quality of college life through public service and leadership development. According to its website, the sorority has 500 chapters with 90,000 members, including U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla.; former U.S. Rep. Corrine Claiborne Boggs, D-La.; and many prominent musicians, actresses and writers.

Pledging is an important ritual for young people seeking to join Greek life. In identical outfits, learning poems and history, students pledge for a number of weeks and those who stick with it “cross over” into membership. Many make lifelong friends and create strong bonds to their new organization. But during the process, there can be a dark side, called “hazing”: physical and emotional challenges that may result in injury, even death. To reduce risk, Greek organizations and universities have shortened the pledge period and banned hazing.

‘Snitches get stitches’

On that late September week in 2008, the sorority hazing resembled a gang initiation rite, according to court documents.

Howard — a B-plus student, athlete and YMCA counselor — said that when she was invited to join the sorority, she was told it did not haze its pledges.

Sorority sisters threatened Howard that “snitches get stitches,” borrowing a gangster phrase, Howard alleges. During one “pledge meeting,” they warned Howard not to drop out, saying she would be “jumped out” with a beating, like being “jumped into” a gang.

In one instance, Howard said she and two other pledges were blindfolded and taken to Odom’s San Jose backyard, where they were sprayed with a hose. In another, they were hit on their hands and knuckles with wooden spoons. Later, they were slammed into walls, hit with a kitchen pot and punched in the stomach.

Howard alleges that the repeated assaults in up to 16 pledge meetings caused welts, large bruises and a knee injury, forcing her to seek medical care. Another pledge, Jade Atkins, was knocked unconscious when she fell and hit her head on a wooden floor — but was simply taken to the shower to awaken, according to the complaint.

Long-term problem

“Hazing has been a long-term problem in African American fraternities and sororities,” said Lawrence C. Ross Jr., author of “The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities.”

Similar concerns have been described by University of Louisville professor Ricky L. Jones in his book, “Black Haze: Violence, Sacrifice, and Manhood in Black Greek-letter Fraternities.”

In 1989, Morehouse College sophomore Joel Harris died after suffering numerous blows to the chest and face, a custom known as “thunder and lightening.” The fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha — whose historical roster includes Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall — settled for $500,000.

In 2009, Prairie View University student Donnie Wade died while running on a track at 4 a.m. while pledging Phi Eta Sigma fraternity. In 1994, Michael Davis died from internal bleeding while pledging Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity at Southeast Missouri State University. Pledges Kenitha Saafir and Kristen High drowned during Alpha Kappa Alpha activities in 2002 at Cal State Los Angeles.

“In white organizations, the problem is alcohol. In black, it’s violence,” Ross said.

“Particularly on California campuses, where the number of black students is tiny, fraternities and sororities are extremely attractive,” Ross said. “They tie people together, and they can do great things. Students feel a bond.

“It’s frustrating. Typically, these things happen off campus, because there is not enough money to have an on-campus house. It is really difficult for the schools to enforce. Several people want to have power over everyone else.”

Alcohol problems are easier to control and respond to, he said. “But it’s tougher to monitor inside a house.”

When Howard sought to join Sigma, she “believed they represented the ‘sisterhood’ she sought in a sorority,” said attorney Reddock.

But after the hazing, then being stalked and threatened, “she feared for her life and did not believe she would survive if she returned to the university.”
