The Capital City was painted Royal Blue and White by Greek-Lettered Siblings, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. as they filled Montgomery’s Capital City Club for the Royal Sapphire Founders’ Ball on Saturday, January 22nd.

More than 300 members and guests from across the country and River Region celebrated an evening honoring the organization’s founders with an abundance of fellowship, delicacies and entertainment. The event was hosted by Epsilon Theta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Psi Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. The two organizations are the only constitutionally-bound Greek-Lettered Organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. both touting scholarship and service as founding principles.

At mid-evening, greetings were given by the presidents of the two organizations, Soror Angier Johnson, President of Psi Lambda Zeta and Frater Dr. Lorenza Smith, President of Epsilon Theta Sigma.  Frater Rev. G. Lucian Ward, Phi Beta Sigma’s Vice-President along with Soror Mary Wedgeworth of Psi Lambda Zeta served as the evening’s host and hostess. Alabama State University’s new Director the Theatre Department, Soror Dr. Wendy Coleman presented a monologue titled, Phenomenal Woman.  Homage was given to the two organizations’ founders through a candlelight ceremony that seemed to set the tone of gratitude and celebration of their extraordinary contributions social uplift. Other highlights for the evening were the event’s awards presentation to the fraternity member, Frater Elton Brooks for the Community Service Award and Frater Rev. G. Lucian Ward, recipient of the Langston Taylor Award for Leadership. The sorority awarded Soror Betty Sharon Reed its Longevity Award for continuous service to the organization and 50-year plus member, Soror Minister Bernice Stewart was the recipient of the Zeta Dove Award. The organizations’ members, LaTonya Duncan and Luke Taylor were crowned the Royal Sapphire Balls’ Queen and King for the evening.

Dignitaries for the event included Phi Beta Sigma’s Immediate Past 32^nd International President, The Honorable Paul Griffin; Soror Katie Campbell, Esq., Chairperson, Zeta Phi Beta’s International Executive Board; Soror Emma Faulk, International Parliamentarian; Soror Dr. Constance Hendricks, South Central Regional Director; and Soror Vivian Marvray, Alabama State Director. The menu included carved roast turkey, spring rolls, Swedish Meatballs, grilled vegetable medley, assorted fruits and citrus iced tea. Guests enjoyed evening coffee and cake adorned with the official shields of the two organizations. An evening of R&B Music allowed the guest to dance the evening away guided by Frater DJ Marquan Higgins with guests requesting an encore next year for the event.

On February 20, 2010, the inaugural “A step in the right direction” step show was held at Lawrence Technical University in Southfield, MI. The event was sponsored by the Nu Nu Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Performers: Sigma Beta Club of Nu Alpha Sigma Chapter- Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. , Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. MSO Grad Step Team, Theta Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Nu Nu Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

The winners of the step show were the MSO Grad Step Team of Zeta Phi Beta and the Theta Tau Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. Each team won a $500 prize, in which they donated to Haiti relief efforts.

On February 19, 2010, actor Terrence Howard, was inducted into Phi Beta Sigma at the Ritz-Carlton in Philadelphia. Attending Friday’s ceremony was the international president, Jimmy Hammock.
