The brothers of the Richmond-Perrine Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi have embarked on a mission to serve the community by touching the lives of young men living in South Miami-Dade County. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded in 1911 on the campus of Indiana University. During inception the fraternity looked to spread its membership to other universities connecting like minded collegiate men helping them to network and acheive.

The Kappa Alpha Psi Guide Right program strives to establish this same connection. By pairing the male youth in South Miami-Dade County with the ideals of this fraternity, Kappa desires to train and mentor young men that will strive to achieve in every field of human endeavor.

Although the Guide Right program affectionately known as “Kappa League” is new to South Miami-Dade, it has been an established part of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for over 70 years. The fraternity and members acknowledge the importance of building strong foundations in the lives of african american and other minority young men.

With this recognition, the men of the Richmond-Perrine Alumni Chapter have embarked on a journey to give back to the community through youth development. Through effective leadership training, community involvement, and youth empowerment; Kappa Leaguers will understand and apply the ideals of “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor”.

The Richmond-Perrine Alumni Chapter recently held their first Kappa League summer picnic culminating the first year its existence and adding to the Kappa League body.

“Capturing the Essence of Elegance” was the theme for presentation of 18 debutantes and beaux at the Blue Revue Ball held Saturday at Shreveport Convention Center.

Beta Epsilon Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority presented the coterie.

The hues of royal blue, pure white and shining silver helped set the scene for the event.

Mr. Blue Revue Deion Sibley and Miss Blue Revue Cynetria Wilson were recognized for efforts in raising the most money for scholarships.

The sorority was founded upon the principles of scholarship, service, sisterly love and finer womanhood and it is those principles which the organization used the six months it mentored and guided the honorees, said official Barbara Adams.

They were involved with projects at Booker T. Washington Nursing Home, a financial aid workshop and a charm clinic to teach the finer points of etiquette, Adams said.

Greetings at the ball were given by Anitra Kennedy Furlow, Southern Regional director of Zeta Phi Beta, who also choreographed the royal dance.

Larine Pullen was 2011 Blue Revue chairperson and Rosie Cash and Sheba Williams were co-chairpersons.

Barbara Adams is chapter president.

The debutantes:

Schyler Anderson, Huntington High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Anderson. Escort: Tory Player, Huntington High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Johnson.

Jakeishia Bradford, Captain Shreve High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Bradford. Escort: Henry Williams, Bossier Parish Community College, son of Cassandra Williams.

Martinette Capers, Huntington High School, daughter of Martin Capers and Susan Willis-Capers. Escort: Marcus Willis, Hamilton Terrace Learning Center, son of Martin Capers and Susan Willis-Capers.

Kyra Clark, Green Oaks Performing Arts High School, daughter of An-jel Clark. Escort: Lamondre Jackson, Green Oaks Performing Arts High School, son of Kimberly Jackson.

Mich’Kayla Coleman, C.E. Byrd High School, daughter of Michael Coleman and Ada Richardson. Escort: Andre Anthony, Captain Shreve High School, son of Mr. and Mrs. Trence McCoy.

Members of the Alpha Rho Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. hosted several members of one of its auxiliary groups recently, as they gathered at the Stork’s Nest for a Royal Tea.

The sorority’s project committee planned the Saturday occasion at the Augusta Street location to honor selected young ladies who participate in the chapter’s Amicettes program.

The committee, led by chairwoman April Faulk, is responsible for spearheading fundraising events for the sorority. The tea is one of several events being held to prepare the young ladies for their official introductions at the sorority’s Finer Womanhood Luncheon. The luncheon will be held March 26 at the Falcon’s Nest on the Maxwell Air Force Base Gunter Annex.

The Amicettes are girls ages 9 to 13 who strive to achieve the ideals set forth by the sorority in its international mission, and who demonstrate potential for leadership in service to the community. Amicettes are affiliated through local chapters worldwide.

Montgomery Amicettes Kylia Emerson, Kayla Exford and RaShanda Thomas were invited to enjoy the recent tea and to participate in an etiquette workshop conducted by Sandra Mims, assistant professor of Health and Physical Education at Alabama State University.

The young ladies received strands of pearls as gifts to commemorate their participation in the event, as well as their prospective introductions at the sorority’s luncheon. They had fun creating and decorating gingerbread houses and a special activity during the workshop, and were also gearing up to prepare Valentine’s baskets for the homeless in a few days.

At the tea, they were joined by chapter president Louvenia Graham, as well as JoAnn Ashley, Darwina Johnson, Ghandi S. Williams, Avionne Glasgow, Willer German and Valeria Murray along with younger guests, Cameron Johnson and Morgan Williams.

Hats and gloves were requested elements of the attire for the occasion. As guests arrived at high noon, they admired the variety of hats and the tearoom, which had been draped in blue and white silk curtains and accented with bows for the tea time event.

Tea tables were covered with white and blue cloths, set with blue and white china, and accented with dove-inspired centerpieces to support the sorority’s official colors and adopted symbols.

The decorations and table settings were prepared by Pamla Tilghman, and included a wooden dove that was featured on the table where the day’s midday treats were displayed, along with royal blue balls that were positioned to create the sorority’s name.

Tilghman joined them during the afternoon as a variety of teas were served with assorted finger sandwiches, fresh fruits and miniature cakes. Throughout the event, Sandra Mims demonstrated the proper way to hold a teacup.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Tau Delta Zeta Graduate Chapter inducted nine girls into its inaugural youth group. Through this group, formally named the Archonette Club, the sorority addresses the needs of girls as they confront challenges associated with growing and developing into young ladies. The girls also learn about the noble ideals of the sorority, which are scholarship, service, sisterly love and finer womanhood.

The formation of the Archonette group represents the chapter’s expansion by forming an auxiliary group designed for girls ages 14 to 18. So far, the girls have created vision boards to express their goals and visions for the future and spread holiday cheer by singing and taking gifts to senior citizens at the Residence on Greenbelt assisted living center.
