Black Greeks take home honors at Bowling Green award ceremony
The office of Greek Affairs honored students and faculty last night at the 2010 Greek Awards in the Union Ballroom.
A slide show of sorority and fraternity chapters opened the ceremony with the entrance of award nominees and their Greek leaders. Multiple students in the Greek community presented both chapter and individual awards throughout the night.
Chapters were awarded certificates for community service, philanthropy, academics and campus involvement, according to Greek Affairs graduate assistant Justin Sipes.
“The past couple of weeks have been crazy but I’m happy with how everything went tonight,” said Sipes.
Both Kappa Delta sorority and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity chapters received the Overall Chapter Excellence Award according to former presidents Michelle Robinson and Reuben Rodriguez.
“I’m very relieved that our hard work finally paid off,” said Robinson.
The Bronze achievement award was given to Alpha Sigma Phi, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, Omega Phi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon for achieving 70 to 79 percent of core value areas.
Silver achievement was awarded to Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Kappa Kappa Gamma, Sigma Kappa and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
Gold Achievement levels were awarded to Alpha Phi and Alpha Xi Delta for completing at least 90% of core value areas.
Eleven of 45 chapters also received national awards in areas such as recruitment, financial efficiency, philanthropy, athletics and overall excellence. Nationally recognized chapters include Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Delta Chi Fraternity, Delta Gamma Sorority, Kappa Delta Sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Sigma Kappa Sorority.
Individual awards and scholarships were also given to students during the ceremony.
The Florence Currier Award with a $250 scholarship was awarded to Sarah Pankratz of the Alpha Phi sorority. Sarah Swegan of the Kappa Delta sorority received the Werner Book Scholarship of $250.
The $1,000 Timothy F. Smith Award was given to Claire Bailey of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and Dionte Jones of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.
John Waynick of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity was awarded the Steven R. Hanna & Kevin L. Ross Memorial Award, while Chris Greggila received the Mitch Weitzman Memorial Award.
The Order of the Omega honored Nichole Ditzel and Paul Conley with the Omega Outstanding Student Award. Several other students, advisors and faculty were also honored with awards at the ceremony.
2010 was the first year Sipes and partner Caitlin Shaw organized the Greek Awards.
