UTM fraternities and sororities both saw improvement in their overall GPAs from fall 2008 to spring 2009. Both also widened the gap between Greek and non-Greek students.
The all-fraternity GPA increased from 2.72 to 2.73 while the all-sorority GPA increased from 3.02 to 3.05.
The largest increase in GPA among the fraternities was Phi Beta Sigma, up from 2.17 in fall 2008 to 2.58 for spring 2009, followed by Kappa Alpha Psi, whose GPA rose from 2.34 to 2.56.
Zeta Phi Beta led the sororities, making the most improvement from 2.32 in fall 2008 to 2.77 in spring 2009. Next was Gamma Kappa Pi, whose GPA rose from 2.57 to 2.91, and Alpha Delta Pi bumped their overall GPA up from 3.11 to 3.16.
Both the UTM fraternities and sororities continued to widen the gap separating the All Sorority/All Fraternity GPAs vs. the GPAs of those not greek-affiliated on campus.
Last fall, the average GPA of the fraternities was 2.72 with non-fraternity males averaging 2.69. In the spring, the all-fraternity average increased to 2.73 and the non-fraternity male average decreased to 2.62.
The same was also the case for the all-sorority GPAs on campus. In fall 2008, the all-sorority average was 3.02 and the non-sorority female average was 2.85.
In spring 2009, the all-sorority average increased to 3.05 and the non-sorority female average dropped slightly to 2.84.
“I’m very happy with the grades with most of our fraternities and sororities,” said Louis Ragsdale, director of Greek Life.
“They made an increase, some stayed about the same or went up and we do usually see a slight increase in spring grades when we compare it to the fall.”
