UAPB AKAs host Reading for Literacy event
Recently, the Alpha Rho chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. hosted the Reading for Literacy event at Broadmoor Elementary as the kick-off event for AKA weekend on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Realizing that reading and literacy are very important, Alpha Rho chapter decided to visit the class of Patricia Thomas for the event. Thomas is a member of the AKA graduate chapter, Delta Omega Omega.
In conjunction with Black History Month, students were broken into groups with an Alpha Rho member as leader. The leaders assisted the students in reading biographies of prominent black Americans such as President Barack Obama, Maya Angelou, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Coretta Scott King, Jackie Robinson and others.
After reading the material, each group presented what they had learned in the form of a skit, song/rap or dance. Keysha Jiles, a member of Alpha Rho, stated that the students in her group enjoyed reading the material, but once her group put it to music, they better comprehended the information they had read.
Group photos were taken following the project. Thomas said that her students “really enjoyed having Alpha Rho present in the classroom.” She added that, due to the cooperative efforts and great behavior displayed by her students, Alpha Rho could return for more reading ad literacy activities.
Gerrica Davis, president of Alpha Rho chapter, congratulated Thomas and the entire Broadmoor staff for having good test scores on the Benchmark last year and for being an achieving school. Broadmoor’s students met AYP (Annual Yearly Progress).
Clintontine Fitz is the principal at Broadmoor, who continues to encourage her diligent and hard-working staff to push forward for yet another successful year as students strive to pass the Benchmark this year.
Davis also complimented them on the excellent behavior and respect of the entire student body. Group leaders were Janelle Cofey, Alexandra Moorehead, Jiles, Davis and Robin Stevens.
Mattie P. Collins and Shirley Denny serve as graduate advisers to the chapter and Jonail Landers is campus adviser.
