After the resignation of the previous ASUW director of community relations, the Board of Directors voted to approve the hiring of Janel Brown to begin serving in the position this week.
The position has been vacant since the former director, Yong Cho resigned in early January, and Brown said she’s currently working on acclimating to the position and planning her goals and initiatives.
“My main goal is to personalize ASUW with the various communities of the UW,” Brown said, who is excited about starting to work as a liaison between the ASUW and UW communities.
For Brown, that means being available for any of the issues students may have, and distributing information from within ASUW to the other UW communities.
Brown’s leadership experience includes serving as the president of the Black Student Union last year. She also sits on the University Book Store Board of Trustees, has worked on the Husky Promise statewide tour, and is involved in the Zeta Phi Beta sorority and the National Panhellenic Council.
“I’m one of the community members that happens to sit on the board,” Brown said. “I want people to feel that I’m approachable.”
The ASUW Board of Directors also approved the addition of a public relations coordinator position in December, which serves as another source of communication between ASUW and the UW community. The administrative position is paid a total of $4,887.48 for both winter and spring quarter.
