Battle Creek Deltas host diabetes awareneness event

The Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The American Diabetes Association and area churches are working together to help improve the quality of life for African Americans affected by diabetes. On Sunday, November 22, 2009, health tables with information on how to prevent, manage and live with diabetes will be available at the following churches: Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, Maranatha Original Church of God, Second Missionary Baptist Church and First Salem Missionary Baptist Church. Did you know:
3.7 million, or 14.7% of all African Americans aged 20 years or older have Diabetes
African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes as non Hispanic whites.
Twenty-five percent of African Americans, between the ages of 65 and 74, have diabetes.
One in four African American women over 55 years of age has diabetes.
More people die of complications from Diabetes than from AIDS and Breast Cancer combined.
“Our goal is to encourage others to become educated about diabetes, learn healthy eating habits, and establish regular exercise programs,” stated Judith Williamson, chapter president of the local chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she adds, “by combining our efforts we hope to increase community awareness about the impact and seriousness of diabetes for people of African descent.”
