Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter Crown 2009 Miss Delta Doll

Members of the Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. presented their Little Miss Delta Doll Pageant Sunday, April 26th at 5:00 p.m. at the Marlboro Civic Center in Bennettsville.

The Little Miss Delta Doll Pageant is sponsored biennially by the chapter to expose young girls ages 3-12 to an environment that foster positive self-concepts and relationships. This year’s theme was, “Stepping toward Greatness, Stepping toward Hope, Stepping toward Change.

Five young contestants captivated the audience as they walked with grace across the stage in their colorful spring dresses with escorts. Each contestant performed the following talent. Ahliah Mack sang, “My Country Tis of Thee, Ashunti Burns sang, “Jesus loves me,” Jaquasia McLaurin recited a poem titled, “Dandelion,” Shay Gaymon sang, “Hero,” and Courtney Wells sang, “Hallelujah.” Other entertainment included; a solo performance by Miss Jamesha Covington and step performances by the Dillion-Marion Alumnae Chapter’s Delta Academy and Delta GEMS. The stage decoration included five dolls dressed in red and white which represented each contestant.

Miss Jaya Peterkin, Miss Delta Doll 2007 took her final walk as Miss Ahliah T’Airah Mack was crowned Miss Delta Doll 2009. Ahliah is the daughter of Tarvarus and Tina Mack. She is four years old and attends Blenheim Elementary School. Her hobbies are playing with dolls, riding a four wheeler, and jumping on the trampoline. Ahliah wants to be a guidance counselor when she grows up. Ahliah was escorted by Master Ryan W. DuPree. She was sponsored by her mother, Tina Mack, Melanie Cole, and Gwen Alford.

Other contestants were as follows: First runner-up was Miss Ashunti Burns. She is the daughter of Felicia Ellis and Xavier Burns. She is six years old and attends Edwards Elementary School. Her hobbies are bowling, playing schoolteacher, and riding on her power wheels. She wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up. Ashunti was escorted by Master Tayvion Little. She was sponsored by Lenora Powe.

Second runner-up was Miss Jaquasia McLaurin. She is the daughter of Darlene Covington and Jackie McLaurin. She is eight years old and attends Bennettsville Primary School. Her hobbies are watching T.V. and dancing. She wants to be a model when she grows up. Jaquasia was escorted by Master Jaheem McLaurin. She was sponsored by Karen Clark and Ava Cain.

Third runner-up was Miss Shay Gaymon. She is the daughter of Reginald and Chisa Gaymon. She is eight years old and attends Wallace Elementary Middle School. Her hobbies are shopping, singing, and reading. She wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up. Shay was escorted by Master Jominique Jacobs. She was sponsored by Glennie Chestnut, Shelia O’Neil, and Charmise Damon.

Fourth runner-up was Miss Courtney Wells. She is the daughter of Clements Rashena Coakley. She is four years old and attends Center Day School. Her hobbies are praise dancing, and singing on the children’s choir. She wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Courtney was escorted by Master Jaylen Bethea. She was sponsored by Shirley B. Grace, Tina Fairley, and Nikki Graham.

The Delta Doll 2009 Committee Members were; Sandra Malichi, Chairperson, La’Shawn Palmer, Co-chair, Gwen Alford, Dannie Blair, Karen Clark, Beatrice DuPree, Tina Mack, Lenora Powe, Vivian Patrick, Vanessa Pearson, and Debra Johnson. Mistress of ceremony was Tina Fairley. Yolonda DuPree is chapter president and Shirley Bethea Grace is the First Vice President.

The Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter would like to thank the contestants, escorts, parents, financial contributors, and the community for support given in making this event the high measure of success that it has become.
