The Murfreesboro Branch of the NAACP and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are co-sponsoring a political forum for city council candidates and mayor, two days after another forum sponsored by the Rutherford Neighborhood Alliance.
Candidates for Murfreesboro City Council and mayor will be receiving invitations to appear at the NAACP forum, which is set from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 11 at Bradley Academy Museum, 415 S. Academy St. in Murfreesboro. The RNA previously announced plans to hold a similar forum, for council candidates only, March 9 at Patterson Park.
“We do this every election year,” said Goldy Wade, president of the Murfreesboro Branch of the NAACP. “This is an opportunity for the community to be educated on certain issues and also for the public to put the names of the candidates with the faces and to listen to where they stand on the issues.”
Candidates will be introduced to the community and make opening statements. The audience will be allowed to ask questions.
“They will be screened by my committee to make sure they are appropriately presented to the candidates,” said Wade.
The committee will include representatives from the NAACP and the sorority.
Responses will be timed, to give the opportunity for as many questions as possible to be asked. Zack Troutman of WGNS will be the moderator, according to Wade.
“It could run a little longer,” Wade said. “I wanted to make sure we allocated enough time to answer any questions people may have.
Murfreesboro voters will choose a mayor and three council members from a field of 11 candidates on April 20.
“I am hoping we have a bigger turnout than prior elections,” said Wade.
