To underscore Alpha Kappa Alpha’s commitment to the Grand Bahama community, chapter president, Ms. Anya Valdes believes the shield’s presence is an immediate visual reminder for the members of the sorority and the citizens of the island on the organization’s purpose. “The members of the Pi Upsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are women who are fully engaged in a series of service projects aimed at the uplifting of the community and showcasing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority as the premiere global service organization. The Sorority’s mission to ‘serve all mankind’ is embraced globally by all members.”
Valdes further shares that her team will be busy as numerous projects are scheduled to carry out the Sorority’s programmatic theme. “Through our ‘Global Leadership Through Timeless Service’ programme, our members will host events that will empower the ‘Emerging Young Leaders’ on our island, aid in increasing the awareness of key ‘Health Initiatives’ such as Breast Cancer and Juvenile Diabetes, join forces with those that battle ‘Global Poverty’ and do our part in sharing the keys to ‘Economic Security’. As always, our focus on ‘Social Justice and Human Rights Initiatives’ like voter empowerment, teen and domestic violence remain at the forefront.”
Members of the Sorority encourage and invite citizens and members of all organizations on the island to join forces to execute all community outreach initiatives. The women of the Pi Upsilon Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority believe that everyone plays a role in making our island, and by extension our nation, a better place for all humankind.
