Josephine Levy, Abbeville General Hospital Board Member, traveled to Springfield, Massachusetts to share in the commencement celebration of her daughter, Cassie Levy, who received a Master of Human Services degree.

Cassie was selected by her Houston campus to represent the Human Services Department as the Student Marshall of the 2009-2010 class of graduate students. She matriculated her degree with an emphasis in Organizational Management and Leadership and completed her studies as a member of the Pi Gamma Honor Society with a 3.97 GPA. Cassie was a member of the inaugural graduate class at Springfield College-Houston which opened in 2008.

“It is the service we render to others which makes us great public servants,” said Levy. “Our communities are dying because have forgotten to help each other. If we imprison all of our delinquent teens and shift our elderly to a nursing home how do expect the world to be a better place? We must unite to revive our neighborhoods and learn to love our children instead of allowing the TV and cell phones to entertain them. Where is our commitment as a community to believe in each other and take back our neighborhoods?”

Cassie has been employed with the City of Houston for 18 years and currently works for the City Controller’s Office as a Management Analyst interacting daily with the IRS and the State Comptroller’s Office. During her tenure with the City she also worked for the City Attorney’s Office for six years.

She enjoys her role as a part time adjunct Professor teaching technology classes and administrative services.

Cassie’s biggest passion in life is public service. She has been an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for 35 years and has held regional, state and local positions. She currently serves as the Texas State Development Coordinator, scheduling annual training sessions for 67 chapters across the state.

Her nonprofit background includes service to other organizations such as the World Youth Foundation, National Organization for Human Services Professionals, Delta Academic Artistic and Philanthropic Foundation, Women in Professional Government, Asians Against Domestic Abuse, Indo American Association, Habitat for Humanity, NAACP, and the Houston Works Youth Program to name a few.

Her future goals are to establish her own nonprofit organization to benefit women and children. She frequently coordinates intern programs, advises college students, conducts workshops and speaks at events. She is a 1973 graduate of Abbeville High School and a 1976 graduate of Southern University.

Cassie has published works with the American Poetry Society, Delta Girls Stories of Sisterhood, Writers of the Wood, and Violets: Inspirational Poems by Women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is working on a trilogy of short stories entitled, “Standing Through the Storm.” During her spare time she continues to garden, travel, write and spend time with her great nieces and nephews.
