Kappa Frater elected to United Nations support organization
The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) has announced the election of Ralph “RJ” Johnson of the United Nations Association of the United States of America to represent North America on the WFUNA Youth Advisory Council to serve a three-year term through 2018. He was nominated by the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA). He is the first American in WFUNA History to be elected to this post.
Of his election Johnson said, “I am humbled and honored by the confidence my fellow delegates have placed in me and to make history as the first American to serve in this capacity. I will do my best in representing the interest of all North American young people.”
Elected by the youth delegates at the 2nd WFUNA Global Youth Forum, which was held in conjunction with the 41st WFUNA Plenary Assembly in Vancouver, Canada Nov. 18-24, WFUNA’s Youth Advisory Council is comprised of 9 youth leaders from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America. In this role, Johnson will advise the Secretary-General on youth issues initiatives, foster youth involvement among United Nations Associations and United Nations Youth Associations, work with WFUNA’s mission of developing youth programs that build the capacity of its global membership and work to strengthen and improve the work of the United Nations by brainstorming pragmatic, innovative, and cost-effective programs for WFUNA’s local, regional, and global networks. “I believe that youth, as civil society activists, have the power to be significant agents of positive change. It will be my charge over the next three years to innovate our outreach, advocate for, engage, and empower our colleagues around the globe to transform the world,” said Johnson.
Johnson has been a member of and has worked with UNA-USA and WFUNA since 2002. He has worked with UNA-USA’s Global Classrooms Program rising over the years from administrative assistant to Deputy Secretary-General, the 2nd highest post in the program. He currently serves on the UNA-USA Council of Chapters & Regions Steering Committee as one of four elected National Representatives. In that capacity, he works with members at-large nationally. He is co-chair of the UNA-USA Youth Engagement Committee and member of the Nominating Committee.
Johnson is an alumnus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Sociology and a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science. He is a member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity (Alpha Epsilon) and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Shreveport Alumni). Johnson currently resides in Shreveport, Louisiana and is the North Louisiana Community Manager for the American Cancer Society.
