Iota Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho named Undergraduate Chapter of the Year

On April 3, 2009, the ladies of Langston University’s Iota Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho were awarded Undergraduate Chapter of the Year at their Southwest Regional Convention in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Dr. LaDonna McCune, a chemical dependency counselor and graduate adviser of the Iota chapter, said that she was thrilled to receive the award for the second consecutive year and said that she’s proud of the chapter’s achievements.

“I’ve been with them since they’ve been inducted. I’ve watched them grow into quality, productive women who are leaders in their community,” McCune said.

The Iota Chapter also received individual awards for outstanding achievements. Karole Blythe received the community service award for her volunteer work as a Langston University Ambassador, member of the Honor Society and an active member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

Brittanie Atkinson took home two awards that evening as she received a $200 scholarship and first runner up in the Annie Neville Talent Competition where she performed a dramatic monologue. Atkinson’s other win was the Ollie V. Green Humanitarian Award for epitomizing the life of George Washington Carver through her great strides as a humanitarian and scientist.

Atkinson’s hard work, determination and positive attitude proved worthy of such awards.

“I put my best foot forward in everything I do,” Atkinson said.

Amanda Jenkins, chapter president, 2007 Miss Sigma Gamma Rho, National Pan-Hellenic Council representative and chair to various community service projects, received the Lecia Swain Ross Undergraduate Leadership Award for her exceptional leadership abilities and service to the sorority.

Jenkins was excited yet humble about her win.

“I called my mom as soon as I found out that I won. I was very surprised but happy I received it. I guess I underestimated myself,” Jenkins said.
