|The City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) District 508, is the largest community college system in Illinois and one of the largest in the nation, with 5,800 faculty and staff serving 120,000 students at seven campuses and thirteen satellite sites city-wide. The City Colleges of Chicago is currently in the midst of a collaborative effort to review and revise CCC programs and practices to ensure students leave CCC college-ready, career-ready and prepared to pursue their life’s goals.
CCC includes seven colleges: Richard J. Daley College, Kennedy-King College, Malcolm X College, Olive-Harvey College, Harry S Truman College, Harold Washington College and Wilbur Wright College. The system also oversees: the Washburne Culinary Institute, the French Pastry School, two restaurants, five Child Development Centers, the Center for Distance learning, the Workforce Institute, the public broadcast station WYCC-TV Channel 20 and radio station WKKC-FM 89.3FM.
This position is responsible for promoting favorable public opinion about one or more college’s administration, faculty, programs, students, alumni and events. This includes developing media and public relations, writing feature articles and narrative reports for college publications, and developing outreach initiatives to broaden partnership opportunities that give the college greater influence and enhanced image.
Identifies public relations activities and organizes college resources to meet needs. Establishes and maintains contact with a variety of local, state and federal officials and media involved with the college. Attends a variety of functions for the purpose of representing the college to support the college’s mission and goals. Assures effective planning and execution of a comprehensive, pro-active program of publicity and media relations, reflecting college priorities. Prepares, or supervises the preparation of a variety of print materials and other media, to promote college activities, instructional programs and other marketing related subjects. Coordinates and participates in marketing activities undertaken by various campus publications/departments.
Plans and directs special events by identifying target groups, developing concepts, designing promotional materials and directing logistical planning. Develops and maintains extensive network of contacts, internal and external, to facilitate event coordination. Participates in professional meetings and conferences and/or contributes to journals or publications to maintain professional/community contacts and visibility for the college. Communicates college goals and priorities to various community organizations.
Performs other duties as assigned.

A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required. A combination of significant experience and education may substitute for degree requirement. Three to five years demonstrated experience in a college or university setting, non-profit service organization or the private sector related to marketing/communications/public relations. Three to five years experience developing community relationships. Experience as a public spokesperson for an educational institution or similar organization. Three to five years full time equivalent experience feature writing and editorial experience with an established consumer newspaper or magazine strongly preferred. Experience developing partnerships and performing promotional work.
Knowledge of educational trends, public concerns and legislation related to higher education. Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate with individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds both within the organization and with external agencies. Strong business acumen, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple projects on deadline. Computer proficiency.
