Delta Soror Named Permanent TV News Anchor in Charlotte, NC.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 Eyewitness News anchor, Erica Bryant has been named permanent co-anchor of “Channel 9 Eyewitness News at 5, 6 and 11p.m.” WSOC-TV and WAXN-TV Vice-President and General Manager Joe Pomilla announced today saying, “We couldn’t be happier that Erica Bryant will succeed Debi Faubion. Her leadership in the newsroom and the community will continue to serve our viewers well.”
Bryant says, “I take this new responsibility very seriously. My goal is to continue Channel 9’s tradition of news excellence. I will work diligently to make sure we continue to provide our viewers with complete and accurate information. Bryant added, “I have a great deal of respect for Debi Faubion, and the huge role she has played in making this station #1 in the market. It has been a privilege to watch and to learn from her.”Bryant will begin her new anchor duties immediately following anchor Debi Faubion’s retirement. Faubion retires after nearly two decades as one of the region’s top anchors. Her last newscast is scheduled for June 4th.Faubion says, “I congratulate Erica on this wonderful opportunity and the privilege to reach out each evening to our neighbors in the Carolinas. Our viewers will soon find out what I already know, that Erica possesses the energy, professionalism, and commitment to be the pre-eminent newscaster in our region. WSOC could not have chosen anyone finer to take over the role that has been so important to me over the past nineteen years. “Since she has been at Channel 9, Bryant has also done extensive reporting. She is passionate about issues facing disadvantaged women and children, domestic violence in particular. Her report on a child pornography ring in Hickory earned her an Emmy nomination.
Bryant also got the first extensive one-on-one TV interview with controversial Mecklenburg County Sheriff candidate Nick Mackey, after he became sheriff-elect.Off the air Bryant makes numerous community appearances and works with various charities. She was recently recognized by Mecklenburg County’s Youth and Family Services for “encouraging families to consider adoption”. Bryant is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a public service sorority.Bryant joined the Eyewitness News team in June 2004 on Channel 9 Eyewitness News Daybreak and Midday with then co-anchor Cullen Ferguson. She moved to the early evening newscast in August of 2008. Previously she worked at WCBD-TV in Charleston, South Carolina. She has also worked at WHNS-TV in Greenville, South Carolina where she anchored and produced a local news magazine show.
A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in Journalism, Bryant makes her home in Charlotte with her 2 children.Bryant will continue anchoring “Channel 9 Eyewitness News at 5:30 p.m.” and “Action News at 10 p.m.” on sister station WAXN-TV 64 until another co-anchor is hired to replace her in those positions.
