Iota Phi Theta fraternity national president: Retaliatory measures will not be tolerated

Iota Phi Theta national president Karl Price told the Free Press on Thursday that there had been some “bad blood” between members of the Michigan State chapter of the fraternity and some members of the MSU football team.

Price, an attorney from Louisville, Ky., also heard from regional fraternity representatives that there had been talk of retaliation against any players present at a “step show” on Dec. 11 at the MSU Auditorium. Participants from all nine historically black fraternities and sororities will participate in the event, which features intricate group stomp-dance routines. The event also is expected to attract fraternity and sorority members from around the state and beyond.

Price said Iota Phi Theta members from other campuses have been instructed not to attend the step show this year and that any retaliatory measures would not be tolerated.

Members of Iota Phi Theta held a number of social events during the week of Nov. 16-22. On the night of Nov. 21, fights broke out at the fraternity’s “afterparty” at the Small Planet nightclub just outside East Lansing and MSU running back Glenn Winston was named by multiple persons as one of the participants in the altercation.

The next night, at least 15 men appeared at a potluck dinner the fraternity hosted in MSU’s Rather Hall, and witnesses said that attendees were assaulted. Ten football players were identified as being present at the event, and coach Mark Dantonio suspended eight. Winston and safety Roderick Jenrette were dismissed from the team.
