Tuesday, January 12, 2010…the day that changed the country of Haiti forever.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook the island nation, its epicenter just ten miles from Haiti’s capital city. The quake, coupled with the dozen or so aftershocks since then have all but destroyed parts of the country. Millions have been displaced, tens of thousands have been killed, now it’s time to rebuild.
“It’s not up to one person to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. If everyone did a small part, it would help. So I’m just doing my small part by having lunch,” said Kari L. Brown, a student at Michigan Tech.
You read correct…just by having lunch! Joey’s Seafood and Grill in Houghton is partnering with Michigan Tech’s Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity to raise money for Haiti.
“It’s hard to do something as a small business, but it’s nice to be a part of something much bigger. They’re doing a lot of the organization, and we’re just helping out with doing what we actually do here to help raise the funds,” said Alan Kiley, owner of Joey’s.
The fund-raiser is part of the fraternity’s “International Kappa Action Relief Effort,” abbreviated iKare.
“Achievement in every field of human endeavor is our fundamental purpose. So we feel as though giving back–doing what we can for the community–is the best thing that a person could do,” said Perry Wilson, President of Tech’s Omicron Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.
Joey’s estimates that by the end of business Wednesday, the restaurant will have made between $5,000-$8,000. Twenty percent of that is going to Kappa Alpha Psi…and then on to Haiti.
