Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio suspended or dismissed 13 players before the Alamo Bowl because of their roles in the Rather Hall altercation.
Oren Wilson, a junior nose tackle from Teaneck, N.J., was not among them. He started in the Alamo Bowl — his 12th start in 13 games — and made one tackle, his 18th of the season.
Now Wilson faces misdemeanor assault charges like several of his current and former teammates from the Nov. 22 on-campus incident in which 15 players stormed into a fraternity potluck dinner at dormitory and allegedly assaulted some attendees. Wilson, who has 26 career starts, also has been indefinitely suspended by Dantonio.
Nearly six weeks ago, campus police told the Free Press that 15 people entered the potluck held by Iota Phi Theta, one of nine historically black fraternities and sororities at MSU. By Dec. 9, 13 had been identified, when nine were charged with misdemeanors. Warrants were issued Monday for the 14th and 15th persons: Wilson and wide receiver Myles White.
As with the others previously charged, according to a clerk at 54B District Court, Wilson and White face one count of conspiracy to commit assault or assault and battery and at least one count of assault or assault and battery. Wilson faces two such counts, White one.
The conspiracy charge carries a maximum one-year jail term, the other a 93-day maximum. All charges are misdemeanors.
White, a freshman from Livonia Stevenson who played on special teams, did not make the bowl trip to San Antonio. He had been suspended for a separate situation in which he faced charges for public urination and minor-in-possession of alcohol outside the Small Planet nightclub in the early hours of Nov. 22. White pleaded guilty to the possession charge in 65A District Court in St. Johns, and had the urination charge dropped. He was allowed to rejoin the team this month.
Dantonio released a statement Tuesday saying that Wilson and White would be suspended indefinitely from all football-related activities.
