ACTeens of Americus benefit Sumter DFCS

ACTeens of Americus, a mentoring program for high school girls, recently held a Benefit Christmas Party to raise money to purchase Christmas gifts for foster children. Sumter County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) has more than 35 children in its legal custody, and the donation by this group was particularly needed during this time of dwindling donations due to the economy.

Loida Waters, interim county director of Sumter DFCS, wrote in a message to staff, “Just want to let everyone know that a group of youth and young adults, ACTeens in Sumter County have just donated a generous gift to our children and Christmas program. It also touches my heart that in a time of ‘me’ and ‘I can’t’ that we are seeing children setting an example for adults in looking out for others as well as saying ‘I can’ and ‘I will.’ What a blessing for me today! What a blessing for some special children tomorrow.”

ACTeens of Americus is sponsored by Rho Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and has been in existence since 1989. The program, for girls in grades 9-12, teaches servant-leadership through a series of workshops and seminars and requires that participants perform two community service projects per month. Service to foster children was selected as the primary focus for 2009-2010 but is only one area of service for the ACTeens.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Americus Police Department provided security for the Benefit Party which was held at the Griffin B. Bell Conference Center.
