AKA Launches Youth Enrichment Program
The Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recently kicked off its ASCEND program.
The ASCEND program focuses on the following key areas: Achievement, Self-Awareness, Communication, Engagement, Networking and Developmental Skills. This signature youth enrichment program is designed to motivate, engage and assist high school students in reaching their full potential and to support their journey to college and other post-secondary opportunities.
The kick-off meeting was held at the OIC Community Health Education Center in Rocky Mount where members of the sorority and a community representative provided information. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members Debora Lightfoot, Benita Knight, Wanda Corbin-Robinson and Nell Burwell provided an overview of what the nine students from various high schools were to expect from ASCEND. Guest presenter Cynthia Gorham, an assistant principal in the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools district, provided a Career Interest Survey along with information about different career clusters to help the students consider their strengths and interests in deciding on a career. Ms. Gorham has an extensive background in career technical education. The kick-off culminated with lunch provided for the students and their parents or guardians.
Chi Omega’s ASCEND students will meet in monthly sessions where they will engage in a curriculum of experiences designed to prepare them for high school graduation and career readiness. Some examples of the experiences are STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – activities, test-taking strategies, cultural outings, community service projects and other fun learning activities.
Applications for ASCEND are still being accepted. Applicants can be male or female students who are presently in grades nine through 12 with at least a C average. Official transcripts must be provided. Anyone interested in the program should call 252-459-9679.
