AKA Soror Blanche Sparrow-Rivers, dies at 105
Blanche Lucille Sparrow Rivers, 105, was born to the parentage of the late Henry Clay Sparrow and Hettie Frances Brown Sparrow in New Bern, NC. She entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, December 28, 2010.
She completed High School at the National Training School in Durham, NC (now known as North Carolina Central University) in 1923. She received her degree from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC in 1927. Mrs. Rivers was a Primary School teacher for the first few years of her career and later taught English to 11th and 12th graders until she retired in 1951, when her only child, her daughter, Barbara Lucille Rivers (Morgan), graduated from high school. She served as Treasurer for her husband’s business, Rivers Funeral Home, Incorporated (currently operating as Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Incorporated) for 77 years. Some of Mrs. Rivers’ Membership Affiliations include: (1) Charter member of Theta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1956. (2) Charter member of the Climbers Club. (3) Charter member of the Olive Leaf Club. (4) Dedicated, tithing, lifetime member of St. Peter’s A.M.E. Zion Church. (5) Volunteer for the American Cancer Society. (6) Volunteer for the Mental Health Club of New Bern. (7) Volunteer for the Craven Community College Community Concerts. (8) Ladies Auxillary of the North Carolina Funeral Directors and Morticians Association and the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. Mrs. Rivers was preceded in death by: her beloved husband of 62 years, Bishop “B.S.” Singleton Rivers on May 26, 1993; her son-in-law, former Mayor of the City of New Bern, Leander R. “Lee” Morgan on December 7, 1999; her siblings, Henry Clay Sparrow, Jr., Issac Sparrow, Charles Sparrow and Hettie Frances Sparrow Dudley.
Left to cherish her memory and carry on the legacy are: her loving and devoted daughter, Barbara Rivers Morgan of the home; five grandchildren, the honorable Judge Michael Rivers Morgan of Raleigh, Attorney Lisa G. Morgan of Durham, Leander R. “Robbie” Morgan, Jr. of New Bern, Gary S. Morgan of Jacksonville and Marc S. Morgan of Kernersville; seven great-grandchildren, Morgan Crutchfield of Durham, Kristen Crutchfield of Greensboro, Marissa Morgan of Hampton, Virginia, Kaci and Kori Morgan both of Charlotte, Mark Daniel Morgan and Marcelle Morgan both of Kernersville; one grandson-in-law,
Harmon Crutchfield of Raleigh; two granddaughters-in-law, Attorney Patsy Smith of Raleigh and Dana Dominique of Charlotte; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins; other relatives and dear friends.
Family visitation and viewing will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., 701 West Street, New Bern, where ritualistic services will be performed by the Theta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Homegoing service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 12 Noon in St. Peter’s A.M.E. Zion Church, 617 Queen Street, New Bern, with the Rev. Robert Kelly, Pastor, Officiating and the honorable Judge Michael Rivers
Morgan, Eulogist. Interment will immediately follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery, New Bern.
