AKA Soror Marie Hilton-Carroll, dies at 98
Marie Hilton Carroll, 98, of Trenton, died Sunday at home surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Trenton, Marie was educated in the Trenton public schools. She was a graduate of Oberlin College of Music where she received a bachelor’s degree and Columbia University’s Teachers College where she received a master’s degree. She had also completed post graduate studies at Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey). She began her teaching career at Barber-Scotia College in Concord, N.C. After marrying, she and her husband worked as music professors at Virginia State College for 16 years. In the early 1960s Marie returned to Trenton and began her career in elementary education as a second grade teacher at Parker Elementary School.
She was a lifetime member of the Mercer County Retired Teachers, The National Association of Negro Musicians and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Epsilon Chapter.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Carroll, and her parents, Charles Hilton and Hattie Robinson. Surviving are her caregivers, Dr. T. Napoleon-Smith and Marcellus D. Smith Jr., whom she regarded as her “son and daughter-in-love.”
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 340 Rev. S. Howard Woodson Jr. Way, Trenton. Interment will be in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick. Calling hours will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Chapel, Trenton.
