AKA Soror Rene L. Greenleaf named director of Hammond Public Library

Rene L. Greenleaf begins a new chapter as director of the Hammond Public Library.

The former assistant library director replaces retiring director Margaret Evans.

“I had an excellent teacher,” Greenleaf said. “Margaret Evans was a wonderful teacher. She was instrumental in making sure I understood all the aspects of the library. She really prepared me to step up and I am very grateful for the wisdom she provided to me because it’s helped me to take on the position.”

As the library leader, Greenleaf makes sure the system is in line with library regulations and that it supplies needed information and resources to the community. She is based at the main library, but makes frequent trips to both the Hayward and Howard branches.

Greenleaf oversees library finances and staff, working with division heads and meeting with them on a monthly basis. She also works to create library programming, is involved in the homebound library outreach program and enjoys spending time reading aloud to young book lovers.

“I enjoy doing that. I just love children’s literature,” she said.

Greenleaf also credits her staff who have shown support and offered assistance during the transition.

“I have a wonderful staff, a staff of individuals committed to community concerns and who are very, very knowledgeable in their respective fields,” she added.

Greenleaf has a bachelor’s in electronic media and communication from Western Illinois University and a master’s in library and informational science from Dominican University. She is a member of American Library Association, Public Library Association, Black Caucus of the American Library Association, Indiana Black Library Network and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

She and her husband, Eddie, live in Chicago and have two children.
