Gary Jazz in the Park theme is ‘The Way It Was’

The Greater Gary American Jazz Association and the Gary Parks Department will close the summer concert season with the annual Jazz in the Park from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Gateway Park, 4th Avenue and Broadway.

Featured performers will be the Billy Foster Trio and Mike Carson.

GGAJA president Errol T. Heffner said the theme, “The Way It Was,” reflects on Gateway Park being the first Jazz in the Park venue 23 years ago. The concert has been at many locations since, most recently near the old Gilroy Stadium where, for a small admission fee, people set up tents, and food vendors were available.

Getting there early was an understatement because cars lined up quickly, especially after church services. But a weak economy has taken its toll, and festivals and outdoor concerts are not immune.

“It was touch and go whether we would host a Jazz in the Park this year,” Heffner said.

Because of the economy, the plus side of this weekend’s concert is that it’s free. People may bring lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas and food, but Heffner said no tents will be allowed.

* In last week’s column, I made an error by not mentioning that Gary native Kenya A. Jones is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Sigma Phi Omega chapter.

I also want to emphasize that the sorority is organizing the third annual Real Men Wear Pink fashion showcase-dinner-fundraiser at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, at Avalon Manor Banquet Center, 3550 E. U.S. 30, Hobart. Members are seeking nonprofessional male models to participate in the fashion show.

For more information on tickets, vendor space or to sign up as a model, write to Sigma Phi Omega chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., P.O. Box 641142 Gary, IN 46402, Attn: RMWP.
