Campus is buzzing as students are anticipating a weekend in Atlanta to support Alpha Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, and the Howard University chapter, the Xi Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated in the Annual Sprite Step Off Competition. Students will be leaving at midnight heading to Atlanta, to not only support the two organizations, but to also do community service. The “Sprite Step Off Service Challenge” involves participating organizations to contribute their time to such organizations as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Ronald McDonald House.

During the trip students will be doing community service with Howard alumnus and newly elected mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed by assisting in renovating neighborhood community centers. In addition, Howard students will also be hosting a recruitment reception with the Howard University Atlanta alumni chapter, as well as potential Howard students.

Bryan Smart, Howard University Student Association President helped organize the trip, and feels that the opportunity was perfect for both the Howard community, and potential students to benefit from overall. “I think that students reaching out to the community [in another state] will not only benefit the University but its future students, all while supporting two dynamic groups as they win the final.”

Both Kappa Alpha Psi and Alpha Kappa Alpha have been practicing tirelessly, preparing for the big event on Saturday.

Alvin Staley, junior legal communications “I am looking to forward to not necessarily winning but doing the best,” said Staley.” The community service is something that I am looking forward to. Especially working with the kids.”

Jasmia Fowler, speech language pathology and member of Alpha Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is looking forward to the big win. “All I got to say is, Alpha Excellence,” said Fowler. “We come second to none.”
