Sprinfield, IL. Greeks organizations commemorate World AIDS Day
The Springfield Urban League on Tuesday partnered with 10 local businesses and organizations to commemorate World AIDS Day and premiere an internationally recognized documentary at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe St.
“A Mirror to the Heart: Breaking the Stigma of HIV/AIDS” portrays the experiences of a generation growing up with HIV/AIDS, and provides viable and culturally appropriate examples of African and American youth and communities affected by HIV/AIDS and those who successfully work to prevent and heighten awareness of HIV/AIDS and its co-factors.
The 28-minute film also showcases black Springfield youth who have organized in response. It premiered in several other Illinois cities; Atlanta; Minneapolis; and in Majaliesburg, South Africa.
Beforehand, a reception was hosted by local youth participants of the Springfield Urban League’s Expressions in the Light and Youth Wellness Bureau program. Free HIV and STD testing also was offered.
Tuesday’s event was held in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health Center for Minority Health Services, LathanHarris Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Tower of Refuge Inc., The Springfield NAACP, Dyamonds & Pearlz Motorcycle Club, Springfield Junior Frontiers and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
