Alpha Frater Jack Whitted, educator and track coach, dies at 83

Jack J. Whitted, an educator and coach who launched the track and field program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, died of bone cancer Monday (Dec. 7, 2009) at Missouri Baptist Hospital. He was 83 and lived in Chesterfield.
Mr. Whitted started the SIUE track and field program in 1970 and coached the Cougars until 1978, compiling a record of 63 wins, 20 losses and one tie. In 2007, he entered the SIUE Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame and received the university’s Jean McDonald Distinguished Service Award.
A native of Danville, Ill., Mr. Whitted was a graduate of Danville High School, Eastern Illinois University and Washington University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and served three years in the Navy.
Mr. Whitted taught and coached at the Illinois State Training School for Boys in St. Charles, Ill., and then was athletic director and coach at two East St. Louis junior high schools before joining the SIUE faculty in 1967.
At SIUE, Mr. Whitted was an instructor in the Health, Recreation and Physical Education Department and served as supervisor of student teachers and president of the Southwestern Health, Recreation and Physical Education District. He retired in 1988.
Mr. Whitted is survived by his wife, Mildred Whitted. They were married in 1953. After his retirement, they co-founded the Professional Skills Institute, a tutoring service in St. Louis. Mr. Whitted also worked for Casey Sports Co. for several years. He was a member of the Truelight Baptist Church.
A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1260 Hamilton Avenue in St. Louis. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
