Alpha Frater Philip Brooks, Jr., dies at 79

Services for Philip Carruthers Brooks Jr., 79, Russellville Road, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. William Watson officiating.

Burial will be in Green Hill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. with Alpha Phi Alpha rites at 5 p.m.

He died at 1:55 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center following a long illness.

Brooks Haven Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A native of Washington, D.C., he was born March 29, 1930, the son of the late Dr. Philip Carruthers Brooks Sr., founder of Brooks Hospital, and Ethel Cowan Brooks.

He taught at Attucks High School until its closing in 1967 and then taught at Hopkinsville High School.

He was the proprietor of Brooks Loan Co. pawn shop and pool hall and had worked as an accountant at the Breckinridge Job Corps.

Following 22 years of service, he retired from the Small and Minority Business Division Cabinet for Economic Development in Frankfort as a senior business development officer.

He was an Army veteran.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and a member of the Crispus Attucks Community Association, having served that organization as president.

Survivors include his wife, Bettye Herring Brooks; two daughters, Ethel Cowanetta Jadonnah Brooks Armstrong, Missouri City, Texas, Phyllis Jene’ Brooks, Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Cowan Henry Brooks, Atlanta, and two grandsons.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke Free Clinic or to the Boys and Girls Club.
