The Lansing Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the nation’s first black fraternity, is sponsoring a community-wide book drive for Shabazz Academy Charter School, beginning Friday.

The book drive will help provide much-needed reading material for underprivileged youth and will last the entire month of March, which is National Reading Month.

The fraternity has adopted Shabazz Academy and is asking the Greater Lansing area to donate at least one new or used book for each of the 330 pre-school through sixth-grade students.

“We are calling on the Lansing community to help support this effort because it is important that our children have the necessary tools to succeed in the classroom and throughout life,” said chapter president James McCurtis Jr.

The fraternity encourages the community to donate new or used dictionaries, thesauruses and chapter books for 5- to 14-year-olds. Books may be dropped off this month from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Shabazz Academy, 1028 W. Barnes Ave. The official kick-off for the campaign is from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
