The Craven County Board of Elections swore in a new member Friday morning to fill out a three-member board that can now begin formal action on business for May 4 primaries and the Nov. 2 General Election.

Zeta Trice of New Bern was appointed at the N.C. Board of Elections meeting in Raleigh on Thursday and took the oath of office at 11 a.m. with fellow board member Bill Miner and Chairman Ray Wood present.

She assumes the post most recently held by Ann Herndon, who resigned because her sister is seeking re-election to the Craven County Board of Education.

“I am humbled and deeply honored by this appointment,” Trice said. “I do look forward to serving with these distinguished gentlemen on the board.”

Wood, who said he was first acquainted with Trice as a local BB&T employee, knows of her fine reputation in the community. “She is a very intelligent person. I’ve known her from her work at the bank and think she’ll fit in very well.”

“I look forward to beginning work with her on this year’s election,” he said. “One-stop voting starts in a month.”

Elections director Erin Burridge said: “Trice has been a poll worker and was one of our chief judges.” That she is already acquainted with the process will be a great help.

Trice said that helping to ensure “fairness and accessibility to voting” is her major impetus for serving. “As American citizens, we have that right and I want to be a part of keeping that possible for all voting citizens.”

Originally from Oxford, N.C., she is a graduate of N.C. Central University in Durham, where she met her husband, James T. Trice, a native New Bernian, and has made his hometown her own since 1973. They have two adult children, son James Trice III and daughter Xavier Trice.

Trice now works for the N.C. Department of Revenue from its Greenville office and is a member of St. Paul Church of Christ Disciples of Christ.

She is active, often an officer, in local organizations including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, The Climbers Club, Carter G. Woodson Historical Foundation Inc., West Street-J.T. Barber Association, New Bern’s 300th committee with the Voyage of Discovery Ghana Tour subcommittee, and Friends of Tryon Palace.
