Gateway Church will host Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated in the “Sunday of Hope” initiative on Jan. 24, 2010.

The Sunday of Hope program was developed by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a way for members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. to support St. Jude. Sunday of Hope allows churches across the country to unite as a body of believers to help children suffering from cancer, sickle cell and other catastrophic diseases.

With more than 650 alumni and collegiate chapters in the United States and across the world, Kappa Alpha Psi is recognized as a major contributor to the advancement of the African American community.

Sunday of Hope is vital to continuing the lifesaving work taking place at St. Jude. In the inaugural year, Sunday of Hope had a tremendous impact with more than 130 churches participating and more than $280,000 was raised. Kappa Alpha Psi continued to answer the call to service by raising more than $800,000 — re-presenting the largest contribution that Kappa Alpha Psi has ever donated to charity. Eighty-five cents of every dollar received supports the research and treatment at St. Jude.

Kappa Alpha Psi members from the Fort Lauderdale Alu-mni chapter will address the Gateway congregation and ask for a special offering for St. Jude in honor of the patients and families. The Alumni Chapter raised almost $3,000 last year and according to Chapter Polemarch (president) Wayne Kirkland, “Our St. Jude initiative has exceeded our initial goals and this is one of the many ways we’re seeking to inspire members and our constituents to increase our contributions to the betterment of mankind.”

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is an international organization founded on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. on Jan. 5, 1911. Since its inception, it has trained over 125,000 men, particularly undergraduates, for leadership roles in their communities and attainment of a high degree of excellence in their academic pursuits.

St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude also provides transportation costs, local living expenses during treatment for the patient and one parent, and assists with meal costs while the family is in Memphis. With operating costs at $1.4 million a day, the children and families of St. Jude need our help. Participating in the Sunday of Hope allows our community to partner in eradicating catastrophic childhood diseases. As a result of the fraternity’s overall efforts, in 2010 the lobby in the Translational Trials Unit wing of the hospital will be dedicated in its honor.
