Omega Frater Henry A. Turner, Jr. to head Alabama Minority Business Opportunity Center
Alex Alvarez, President of the South Region Minority Supplier Development Council and Grant Operator for the Alabama Minority Business Opportunity Center (MBOC), has announced that Henry A. Turner, Jr. has been named Executive Director of the Alabama MBOC. Mr. Turner brings over 36 years of experience in direct and indirect purchasing as well as 16 year background in minority supplier development. Mr. Turner is joining the Alabama MBOC as Executive Director after spending over 21 years in procurement and purchasing with Honda Manufacturing. Henry started his career with Honda of American Manufacturing, Inc., in the Motorcycle division, as a member of the North American Development Team. He has worked in several areas of Honda’s purchasing department before moving to Alabama as a member of Honda‘s Alabama Project team in June of 2000.
In addition to his distinguished career, Turner served as the Chairman of the Board of the South Region Minority Supplier Development Council, and has held several positions on the Board of Directors prior to his election as Chairman. Mr. Turner was named the Minority Business Advocate of the Year by the South Region Minority Supplier Development Council in 2002 and 2009. In 2008, he was the recipient of the Minority Business Development Agency’s Distinguished Supplier Diversity Award by the Atlanta National Enterprise Center. Mr. Turner has also served on the Advisory Board of the Alabama Minority Business Opportunity Center, and served briefly as Grant Operator for the Alabama MBOC during its transition. In addition, Mr. Turner serves on the Board of Directors of Southern Bank and Trust.
Prior to relocating to Birmingham, Henry has served on the Board for the Greater Cleveland Council of the Boy Scouts of America, East End Neighborhood House, United Way Budget and Allocation Committee. In addition, Mr. Turner has held many chair positions with the Greater Cleveland School of Engineering and Institute of Supply Management – Columbus Chapter, including both President and District Representative at the Council level. Mr. Turner is a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He and his wife, Michelle, have two daughters, Lauren and Michelle.
The Alabama Minority Business Opportunity Center (MBOC) is a not-for-profit Center funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA). The Alabama MBOC is operated by South Region Minority Supplier Development Council (SRMSDC), a local affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). The Alabama MBOC is charged with providing Minority Business Enterprises consulting, procurement, and financing assistance.
