Omega Psi Phi Second District Conference kicks off this week in Syracuse
A step show, dances and a workshop on domestic violence are some of the events that will be open to the public when the Chi Phi and Kappa Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., one of the nation’s oldest black Greek fraternal organizations, holds its Second District Conference at the Oncenter this weekend.
The 62nd District Conference is expected to draw 500 people.
Founded in 1911, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, has a national membership of more than 150,000. Members of the fraternity include Count Basie, Bill Cosby, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Local members include Syracuse City Court Judge Langston McKinney, business leader James W. Jordan and Ben Jeffers.
The conference opens Thursday with a public program 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel.
A reception will be 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at the Omega Lounge in the Oncenter. The cost is $15, and ladies are free.
On Friday the conference will host a blood drive and health fair for the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the War Memorial.
A domestic violence workshop will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel. The event is free and open to the public.
The public is also invited to a Step Show 8 to 10 p.m. at the War Memorial. The event is open to the public. Tickets cost is $10.
The public may also attend the Pan-Hellenic Dance at the Oncenter from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The cost is $25 and ladies are free.
The blood drive and health fair continues 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the War Memorial. The event is free and open to the public.
A talent hunt will be 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carrier Theater at the Mulroy Civic Center.The event is free and open to the public.
Club Omega will be in the Tiffany Ballroom of the Genesee Grande Hotel from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. The cost is $25 and ladies are free.
