Phi Beta Sigma Serving the Savannah and Global Community
On the weekend of Friday, September 7, 2012- Sunday, September 9, 2012, brothers from all across the Great State of Georgia visited Savannah, Georgia to attend the 2012 Georgia State Leadership Conference on the campus of Savannah State University. The host chapters for the conference were Tau Beta Sigma, Gamma Zeta (Savannah State), and Pi Rho (Ga. Southern).
With this year’s theme, “Making A Difference in the Global Community”, one the goals of the conference is to show that Phi Beta Sigma is not just a Georgia thing, Southern Region thing, or USA things, it’s an International Fraternity.
For this year conference, there were Two Social Action community service projects that were going on. The first project was Sigma Extreme Make-Over and Feed the Homeless. This event took place at Feed the Hungry Homeless shelter in Garden City, Georgia (small city outside of Savannah). Brothers help to paint, sand, and decorate the shelter. The second project was the Book For Africa Drive. Brothers across Georgia were asked to donate books to the project, and then afterwards, the books will be mailed to Africa to distribute books to the children of Africa. The goal of Books For Africa is to end the book famine in Africa. Phi Beta Sigma in the state of Georgia collected 619 for the Books For Africa project.
“Books For Africa would like to thank you and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for the successful book drive you recently organized at your GA State Leadership Conference. The books you donated will bring much joy and reading pleasure to the children in Africa,” stated Alfreda Asbury; Development Assistant for Books For Africa.
“It’s great knowing that you made a difference in the community,” said Bro. Trae D. Johnson; Ga. State Director of Social Action
