The church serves on the third Saturday of each month, with the help of members of the Sigma Beta’s Club of Starkville along with Delta Upsilon Sigma and Theta Iota Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. are volunteering their time to help the church help others. The church joins numerous local churches throughout Oktibbeha County who volunteer to cook and serve a meal to their “special guests” who may be in need of a hot meal.
The Casserole Kitchen serves hot, nutritious meals to anyone in need at no charge. Meals are served each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church located at 307 University Drive in downtown Starkville.
The meals are served in the Fellowship Hall on the ground floor of the church. The Tuesday and Thursday meals are served between 6-6:30 p.m. and the Saturday meal is served from 11:30 a.m. -noon.
These hot, nutritious meals are prepared, served and donated by volunteers as a ministry from many churches in the Starkville and Oktibbeha County.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded in 1914 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. It is an international organization of leaders with a membership of more than 150,000 men in over 650 chapters in the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.
The Sigma Beta Club was founded by Phi Beta Sigma in 1950, focusing on mentoring and grooming males ranging from ages 8-18. Living up to the motto “Culture for Service and Service for Humanity” Chapter President Dederick Daughtery said “service is the keystone of all our activities.”
“We strive to provide meaningful activities and service project that can benefit our community,” Daughtery said. “Without being a service to our community our organization would cease to exist and its ideals would perish.”
Daughtery said the Golden Triangle is the chapter’s most valuable resource and strength, and as an organization that services the Golden Triangle Area, the organization is always looking for meaningful projects, such as Casserole Kitchen to better the community. They serve local communities including Starkville, Columbus, West Point, Eupora and Noxubee County.
