A South Carolina university has suspended a sorority for five years for a number of hazing incidents.

A spokeswoman for Coastal Carolina University in Conway said Thursday the decision involves Zeta Phi Beta sorority and violations of the university’s hazing policies.

The sorority has been suspended from all activities, recruitment of new members, meetings, community service actions and social events.

University spokeswoman Mona Prufer said the step was taken following an investigation by the school’s office of student conduct.

Office director Travis Overton says a number of hazing violations occurred during the spring semester this year.

A call seeking comment from sorority officials was not immediately returned.
