AKA Soror and WIU Cadet Laurkee K. Veal Commissioned in U.S. Army
Western Illinois University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Cadet Laurkee Kate Veal, of Chicago, was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during Fall 2015 Commencement Weekend on the WIU-Macomb campus.
Veal graduated during the Fall 2015 ceremonies with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in military science. Veal will begin the Basic Officers’ Leadership Course (BOLC) in January and will later become an active duty ordinance office, stationed in Ft. Hood (TX).
During her four years at Western, Veal was a member of the Centennial Honors College and was vice president of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She was also chosen as the WIU Department of Psychology’s Fall 2015 Department Scholar.
Western’s award-winning ROTC program was established in 1968. The University’s military science department has a longstanding tradition of excellence. The department was honored with the Douglas MacArthur Award for the best ROTC battalion in the Midwest in 1994, 2001 and 2002. The Leatherneck Battalion has also been honored as the Best ROTC Battalion in the Brigade in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
